How To Measure
Get it right the first time — here's exactly how to measure for inside or outside mount.
Tools You'll Need
Use a steel tape measure rather than a cloth or fabric one — cloth tapes stretch over time and can throw off your numbers by a fraction of an inch, which matters on a made-to-order product. You'll also want a pencil and paper to record each measurement as you go, and a small step stool if your window is tall.
Inside Mount
Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the narrowest of the three — window openings are rarely perfectly square. Measure the height at the left, center, and right, and use the longest of the three. Check the depth of your window frame against the product's mounting depth to confirm an inside mount will actually fit before you order.
Outside Mount
Measure the width and height of the area you want to cover, not just the window opening itself. For the best light and privacy coverage, most homeowners extend the shade 2–3" beyond the frame on each side and 2–4" above the top of the frame.
