Northern Blinds started because we couldn't believe what a "custom" blind actually cost by the time it reached someone's window.
A bad quote is where this all began
Our team spent years in in-home sales for a national blinds company — the kind of job where a rep shows up with a swatch book, measures your windows, and hands you a quote that's somehow three or four times what the materials actually cost. We were good at it, but we never loved it. We'd sit in someone's living room watching them do the math in their head, trying to figure out how three windows could cost as much as a used car.
Eventually we started asking the obvious question: why does any of this need a showroom, a commissioned sales rep, and a huge markup baked in before you even see a price? Blinds aren't complicated. They're fabric, a headrail, and a mechanism, cut to a size you already know how to measure yourself.
So we spent about a year figuring out who actually makes this stuff. It turns out a small number of real manufacturers — Maxxmar among them — produce most of what gets sold under a dozen different retail names. We built a relationship directly with them instead of going through a distributor, put together a straightforward website, and shipped our first order ourselves.
That was three years ago. We've since shipped to thousands of homes across Canada, but the idea hasn't changed: cut out the parts of the process that don't actually make your blinds fit better, and pass the savings straight through to you.
